Ridiculously Easy Contest #4 - Two books/One winner

It's been entirely too long, so... it's time for another Ridiculously Easy Contest(tm)!

Want to win a free book? Of course you do. Who doesn't? In fact, I'm going to let you win two books because that's how I roll. And since I like things simple, we're going to keep this uber-simple. Answer a question, win books. That's it.

HOW TO WIN: Leave a comment with an answer to the poll question.

WINNERS WILL BE DRAWN: October 5, 2011

THE PRIZE: Two (count 'em, TWO) electronic books from my backlist. Your choice of titles!

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!

If there are at least 15 legitimate, non-anonymous responses to the question, I will also draw a name for a signed paperback copy of your choice from my print backlist. (Please note not all my books are available in paperback)

(note on anonymous posts: I don't mind anonymous settings, but there needs to be a name in the text of the comment at least!)

THE QUESTION:

How many licks does it take -- wait, sorry.

Okay, the real question:

What's your preference:
Novels, Novellas, or Short Stories?

See? Told you it was easy.

Want to be notified of future stupidly easy and ridiculously simple contests? Join my Yahoo Group.

Winners will be randomly drawn and posted on October 5, 2011, and have 72 hours to contact me to claim their prize.

Good luck!

  1. To be honest, I love all three! When I have the time, I really love to sink into a long novel, but the truth is that life often gets in the way and I just don't have time for that. So a novella (or a well-crafted short) can be finished in the time I have between kids and dogs and husband and military life and all the crazies!

  2. Oooh, novels for sure. I read super fast and I like to be able to sink into a story. Anything too short and I am done in an hour. Plus, to be honest most novellas/shorts are not priced proportionally lower than novels when you compare length so I feel like I am getting more for my money.

ALthough now that I am blogging/reviewing, I like them more b/c I can get post faster! ;-)

  3. I read them all, but I prefer novels. I really enjoy long novels (and series).

  4. I love novels. Yummy and deep. : )

  5. I love novels, especially those that are part of a series. A novel allows for a lot of development, plot-wise and character-wise! Also gives you a lot of time to get to know and enjoy the characters better. :)

  7. I prefer novels as well. Novellas also have their place, but often either end too abruptly, or feel like too much is happening off page. I generally only enjoy true shorts if they are a glimpse into the life of characters I am already familiar with. (Plus novels have time for more sex. ;D)

  8. I'm a novella fan. I like the other lengths, too, if they are well-written, but a good novella is just right for a story to be complex enough without getting bogged down with too many complications or tangents just to take up space. Or maybe my attention span is just getting shorter with age ;)

  9. I like them all - shorts are great for clearing the reading palate between longer works. :)

What if I already have the collected works of LA Witt? ;)

Hmm, I like and read all but the one that I probably favor more are Novels. There is more story, more character buildup and just overall progress of the plot. I like novels more because I'm not left with well... wanting more. lol... and of course, what is always a plus...there is more smut >3 fufu~

  11. Hmmm--I'm one for the longer novel--I'm a closure kind of girl--I admit with much chagrin that I like HEA--oh hell, let's be honest I LOVE HEA--there--God, that was freeing somehow. Now, after you are done hating on me--you angsty, like the real world and not neat packages group--please take pity on me and step aside and let me win. (peeks from behind her hands)--damn! didn't work! and I thought I was just the right level of pathetic (sigh).

okay--not above begging--please, please pick me!! (kneeling on ground now=:)

    (sincerely) Love your work L.A.

  12. Novels. The longer the better (within reason). If a novel is part of a series - even better. I tend to get attached to the characters and don't want to let them go...

Doesn't mean I don't read novellas or even sometimes short stories (but the latter - rarely). But if I have a choice, I prefer a long novel. First of many ;)

  13. I love all three for different reasons and depending on my mood and circumstances will depend on what I will choose to read. I love novels when I have time to sit and get engrossed on the stories and characters. But shorts and novellas give me a fix if I don't have the time or just want a quickie :-D

  14. I prefer novels because sometimes shorter stories aren't able to provide the depth of character or plot that I enjoy

  15. It depends on my mood and what the story dictates, but I generally prefer novels. Sometimes you can tell a full story as a short, but I find I often want more. Sometimes I want something quicker and novellas work for that. There are very few shorts I really like or that stick with me.

  16. I prefer novels & novellas.
My main complaint with a lot shorts is that I'm reading along & then, WHAMMO!, the book just ends, but with novels & novellas, you get more of a transition from the climax.

  17. Novels, but I like novellas and shorts too

  18. Novels are my first choice. When I'm at work and want to read something on my phone, I do tend to go with something shorter though, so I don't totally get sucked into a book, hehe. I enjoy the character development and how you get a deeper look at the MC's with novels. I read fast, and also get really sucked into the MC's lives in good novels and I enjoy the escapism.

  19. Novels are my favorites by far but I read a lot of novellas when I don't have the time to sink into a novel. Since it's lunch time I'll use a food analogy. I want a good meal but sometimes I'll settle for a snack.

Shorts are just frustrating. I usually end up wanting more..

  21. Novels. I like time to really get to know the characters and have an interesting plot. Though I enjoy novellas too, when they're done well and I have less time.

  22. Novels first, then novellas and last short stories BUT above and beyond everything is the author.

  23. Ahhh, such a loaded question! Generally, I prefer novels. I just think there is so much more depth. However, I read plenty of novellas. Sometimes, I just want a quick read. And, of course, short stories are a great way to find new authors or to have just a little something to read before bed! I also really enjoy when an author writes a novella or short story as part of an ongoing series, like book 2.5.

  24. Definitely novels! I’m learning to appreciate novellas because I have a lot of them on my nook but I prefer longer stories because I get to learn so much more about the characters J

  25. I'm another jumping on the 'prefer novels bandwagon' for a few reasons... I'm a faster than average reader and I detest starting & finishing something within an hour... Ugh. I love emotional depth and multi-faceted stories, and to be very honest, there are very few author's who can successfully achieve that within a novella length story, let alone a short. Finally, with a novel, I feel I get more bang (so to speak) for my buck with a novel. I'm much happier spending $8 on a novel 100k words in length, than $4 for 20k words. That said though, occasionally a short can be just what I need, when I'm really tired but just not quite ready to sleep... That's when a short is perfect. As to novellas, I can handle them if they're a series, but I usually won't read them until the storyline is complete.
